The Socratic Speech and Debate Institute was founded in 2017 in order to teach students the fundamental techniques of effective argumentation and rhetoric. Having expanded the program since, these educational clinics are now offered at local schools, libraries, and youth centers.
What is the goal?: The program is designed to help students improve their public and social speaking abilities. The goal is to teach students speech, presentation, and argumentation skills and give them opportunities to learn about methods of effective communication and reducing social anxiety.
What will students learn?: The program will include strategies and tactics to improve speaking confidence and quality. Students can also learn the skills required for effective debating. This includes learning how to collect, format and contextualize evidence for strong argumentation.
What does the program include?: An experienced peer will aid students in all things speech and argumentation related. This is an academic safe space where students can get help doing everything from preparing for job interviews to practicing for class presentations.
